Best strategy for zero-downtime DB migrations on large Postgres tables?

We have a 4TB Postgres table that needs a schema change. Adding a column with a default value is locking the table for minutes. What's your go-to pattern for online schema changes without downtime? We're looking at tools like `pt-online-schema-change` or building our own expand-contract cycle.
